Bouquillion Philippe

PR Université Sorbonne Nouvelle - membre titulaire

Philippe Bouquillion has been a professor of Information and Communication Sciences at Sorbonne Nouvelle University since 1 September 2024. He is a member of the Department of Film and Audiovisual Studies.

He is also the head of inIdEx ‘Cultural Industries and Artistic Creation’ (ICCA), an inter-university federation comprising 14 laboratories which funds research into cultural industries and digital technology.

He specialises in the socio-economics of cultural and digital industries. His recent work has focused on concentration and financialisation in these industries, as well as on audiovisual platforms in Europe and India. He has also studied the technological integration of cultural industries, particularly the challenges posed by artificial intelligence and various digital infrastructures, such as the cloud. He also considers the public policy issues raised by these industrial developments, particularly those relating to the so-called cultural exception. He has conducted research projects involving field surveys in specific industrial sectors, including cinema and the audiovisual industry, live performance, recorded music, the press, and crafts.

Philippe Bouquillion is currently the lead or co-lead researcher on several nationally and internationally funded research programmes.

Since December 2025, he has been the co-lead researcher, alongside Bruno Lefèvre and Christine Chevret-Castellani, on the research programme Concentration and Artificial Intelligence in the Audiovisual, Film and News Media Industries.

From 2021 to 2028, he will also lead the French team on the Global Media and Internet Concentration (GMIC) programme (http://gmicp.org). Funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, this project is led by Dwayne Winseck, a professor at Carleton University in Ottawa. The programme brings together 39 countries.

Since 2023, he has also headed the French team for the European Ownership Monitor (EurOMo) programme. This programme is funded by the European Commission and led by Josef Trappel, a professor at the University of Salzburg in Austria.  EurOMo aims to characterise the ownership and control structures of news media and assess the accessibility of this information to the public.

Between 2022 and 2024, he led a research programme on the discoverability of French-language music content in collaboration with Lattice at the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM). The programme brought together socio-economic stakeholders, including the National Federation of Independent Labels (Félin) and Musicdiscovery, a data science company. The programme was co-funded by the Quebec and French Ministries of Culture.

Alongside the research programme mentioned above, he has directed or co-directed over a dozen other nationally or internationally funded research programmes, including one funded by the French National Research Agency’s Culture, Creation programme (December 2009–March 2013) and various programmes funded by the French Ministry of Culture and Communication.
